How did your interpretation of the message change from one modality to the next?
Communication is an tool that we totally take for granted. In the era of social media we think that the best form of communication is over texting rather than face to face conversations. In my opinion, the best modality of communication is face to face because the message can not be misinterpreted or miscommunicated. Which tends to happen in other forms of communication. In this message the tone is interpreted differently in the voicemail and the face-to-face delivery. It's so easy to get offended by a text or email because of the tone of the message
What factors influenced how you perceived the message?
The factor that influenced how I perceive the message is the tone. Since I work at an online university majority of our communication is either by phone or email. Therefore I am very familiar with the lack of urgency with emails especially with information that is time sensitive. Honestly, from past experience I do not think emails should be used for time sensitive information because of the delay of response. I have found that voicemails and face-to-face are the best forms of communication when delivering a message of importance.
Which form of communication best conveyed the true meaning and intent of the message?
I think the face-to face best displays the true meaning of the message and intent because the tone of the message perceived. I use email to follow up from a conversation and not to initiate a conversation. For example, I will have students email me about information and I will respond with the information requested and they will still email me again asking the same questions when I answered it the first time. However, take that same situation with a face-to face conversation and it leaves no room for any misinterpretation about my message. Even leaving a voicemail at time can be difficult because people will hear what they want to hear or not listen to the whole message itself.
What are the implications of what you learned from this exercise for communicating effectively with members of a project team?
To effectively communicate with a team, I would use email or voicemail to follow up from a face-to face conversation. Although all forms of communication are effective it would depend when the form of communication being used to deliver the message. For example, face-to face communication allows for the audience to ask questions followed by the directions given and it alleviates any miscommunication from the project manager. Since we live in technological world of communication such as social media, email, text, skype and inc. it's even more important to communicate face to face because it allows the words and visuals to carry the weight to ensure a message is clearly understood. In addition, as a project manager knowing when to use the appropriate form of communication to deliver the message is imperative because it helps to make sure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities toward the success of the project. Technology has made communication easier for any project manager because it allows for the people on the team to be accessible and mobile but yet effective for delivering outcomes for the project.
